  • 8BitDo Lite controller feels tailor-made for Switch Lite owners

8BitDo Lite controller feels tailor-made for Switch Lite owners

If you’re Nintendo Switch Lite owner looking for a controller that matches the adorable look of your console, 8BitDo’s newly launched controller might be the answer. The company’s newly launched 8BitDo Lite controller is an adorable looking gamepad styled after Nintendo’s new Switch Lite.

The rectangular gamepad mimics the look of the Switch Lite so perfectly that it’s hard to say whether it comes from a third-party manufacturer. The 8BitDo Lite features largely the same buttons and functionality of a full-sized Nintendo Switch controller. The only difference being that instead of analog sticks, it has D-pads.

    8bitdo lite

Priced at $25, the controller is now available for pre-order while shipping begins on October 30. It’ll be offered in yellow and teal color variants. Apart from Switch Lite, the controller also works with PC, Android, macOS, and more. It has a switch on top that lets you swap between Switch and Xbox compatible functionality. Connectivity features on the controller include USB C and Bluetooth.

While there’s no apparent reason for gamers to use a wireless gamepad with the new Nintendo Switch Lite. That said, in case you still find the new console a tad heavy to hold for long periods, the 8BitDo Lite could be the perfect accessory to go with your Nintendo Switch Lite. Not to mention, it is so compact that one could easily fit one into a small bag.

  • Critical iOS exploit impacts millions of devices from iPhone 4S to the iPhone X

Critical iOS exploit impacts millions of devices from iPhone 4S to the iPhone X

A newly discovered bootrom exploit in iOS, dubbed as ‘checkm8’, could lead to permanent jailbreak on iOS devices that run on Apple’s A-series processors.

According to security researcher axiomX, the vulnerability affects hundreds of millions of iOS devices starting from the iPhone 4S, to the iPhone 8, as well as the iPhone X. The affected devices also include iPad models starting with the iPad 2 up to the 2017 iPad Pro.

The vulnerability could give attackers deep access to iOS devices. axiomX claims that ‘checkm8’ is possibly one of the biggest news in the iPhone hacking community for years. Being a bootrom exploit, it affects devices at bootrom level instead of taking advantage of vulnerabilities in the OS or software. Now, this essentially means that Apple won’t be able to fix the issue with a simple patch or an update. To fix the issue, Apple would need to make physical changes directly to its A-series processors.

As expected, the new flaw has some serious security concerns, as the vulnerability can offer root access to affected devices. Therefore, it’s possible that attackers could use the exploit to take control and delete sensitive information from other user’s devices.

However, there’s some good news as axiomX explained that the vulnerability can’t be used remotely. Now, this means that attackers would need physical access to an iOS device to take undue advantage of this vulnerability. Therefore, just make sure you’re iPhone or iPad is passcode protected.

Apple is yet to make any official statement regarding this exploit, though we’ll update you as soon as Apple responds to the matter.

iPhone jailbreaking isn’t as popular as it was 7 years from now. During the early days of the iPhone, jailbreaking was primarily done to install third party apps that were not available via the App Store. Jailbreaking allows iOS users to add apps and other functions that Apple wouldn’t usually allow users to perform on their iPhones. iOS has rather strict limitations that are designed to protect users from malicious apps but also gives Apple’s more control over the ecosystem. Therefore, jailbreaking hurts your iPhone’s security, but at the same time gives users more control over the phone.

The last jailbreak we heard was back in August this year when a new vulnerability was found in iOS 12.4. It was the first iOS jailbreak to be publicly revealed in years.

  • OnePlus 7T: Everything you need to know

OnePlus 7T: Everything you need to know

OnePlus officially announced the latest OnePlus 7T during a global unveiling event from India. The successor to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro,  the latest OnePlus 7T gets its fair share of upgrades across the board.

Some of the handset’s highlights include a frost mist matte glass build, triple rear cameras on the back, as well as a 90Hz AMOLED screen – all for less than $600. Here’s what’s new in the OnePlus 7T.

    Display

The OnePlus 7T packs a 6.55-inch Full HD AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. Besides, the OnePlus 7T offers a screen refresh rate of 90Hz, along with a taller aspect ratio of 20:9  giving it a more compact form factor. The 90Hz refresh rate allows the screen to refresh itself within just milliseconds – 40 milliseconds, to be exact – which is a boon when playing high-end games or binge-watching TV shows.
Elsewhere, the waterdrop notch gets reduced by 31 percent which would make watching movies or playing games even more immersive. It also offers other useful features such as HDR10+ compatibility along with a high peak brightness of 1000 nits.

    More power

Under the hood, the OnePlus 7T gets powered by the latest Snapdragon 855  chipset clocked at 2.9Ghz bundled with 8GB of RAM. Besides, Qualcomm claims a 15 percent performance improvement on the Adreno 640.

    Storage

The handset is offered in two choices when it comes to storage – 128GB and 256GB. However, it’ll be offered in 128GB storage in most markets. Besides, the Chinese manufacturer is also offering 5GB of cloud storage for free. Also, there’ll be an additional 50GB of cloud storage for free, though the offer is only valid for the first year.

    Software

Elsewhere, the OnePlus 7T will be the first smartphone to ship with the latest Android 10 OS out-of-the-box. The company’s proprietary OxygenOS 10 runs on top.

    Camera

In the photography department, the OnePlus 7T packs a triple-camera system on the back with a 48MP primary sensor, 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, and a 16MP ultra-wide sensor with a 117-degree field of view. For selfies, there’s a 16MP front-facing shooter.

    Bigger battery and faster charging

Juicing up the handset would be a 3800mAh battery with support for fast charging with the bundled 30W Warp charger. Boasting about the handset’s fast charging ability, OnePlus claims it’s 23 percent faster than the previous-gen Warp charging facility. Other key features on the OnePlus 7T include UFS 3.0, an in-display fingerprint scanner, as well as face detection feature.

    Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus 7T will be available in the US starting October 18 for $599 via OnePlus.com, T-Mobile.com, and in T-Mobile stores. The handset will be offered in a choice of Frosted Silver and Glacier Blue color variants.

  • Amazon launches Alexa-powered Eero mesh router

Amazon launches Alexa-powered Eero mesh router

Amazon has unveiled its brand new Eero mesh router with Alexa controls, making it the first Eero product released since it acquired the maker of mesh home routers in February this year. Priced at $99, the new Eero router is available in the United States starting today, and will arrive in Europe later this year.

Amazon boasts that its new Eero router offers hassle-free usage, allowing for setup of 10 mins or less. The router packs a dual-band radio system, as well as deeper integration with Alexa controls. With advanced Alexa integration, it allows users to control their network via voice commands. For instance, users can turn on or off guest Wi-Fi with voice commands, or pause Wi-Fi access to a specific device on the network (such as a video game console or any other device such as a tablet or a smartphone).

Such advanced features are currently not available for third party devices, though Amazon announced its plans to make an API so that other companies can use these advanced features. Routers from the likes of TP-Link, Asus, Linksys, and Arris will get support for these features later this year.

As already mentioned, the new Eero router will cost $99. However, it’ll also be offered in a pack of three which costs $249. According to Amazon, the three-pack can cover a house of up to 5000 square feet, and offer speeds of up to 350Mbps with dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and supports 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0 LTE.

To recall, Amazon announced its Eero acquisition, manufacturer of mesh home routers back in February this year. Amazon stated that acquiring Eero will allow them to help customers connect their smart devices better, with Alexa-powered devices which will be easier to set up and manage. The latest Eero router marks the first new product from the mesh networking company since Amazon acquired it earlier this year.

  • Microsoft finds critical zero-day bug in Internet Explorer

Microsoft finds critical zero-day bug in Internet Explorer

Microsoft has alerted users about a new flaw found in its age-old Internet Explorer browser, citing a vulnerability which allows hackers to take control over a user’s entire PC. The vulnerability has been described as ‘scripting engine memory corruption’ by Clement Lecigne at the Threat Analysis Group.

According to Microsoft, the vulnerability causes memory corruption in a way that allows attackers to hijack a user’s entire PC. For instance, it gives the hacker the same administrative rights as the legit owner who can perform tasks such as install or delete programs.

“In a web-based attack scenario, an attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website, for example, by sending an email,” Microsoft explained.

Besides, Microsoft also notes that the flaw is found in all versions of Internet Explorer, be it Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or even the latest Windows 10. To tackle the issue, the software giant has rolled out an emergency patch to fix the ‘critical’ bug. Microsoft is now urging users to install the patch immediately.

Is it time to ditch Internet Explorer?

Microsoft’s Edge is now the default browser in Windows, however, it doesn’t mean that IE is dead. The company would have axed IE a long time ago had it not been for compatibility reasons.

The issue with Internet Explorer is that many apps are specifically designed and optimized for the browser, which means that Microsoft has no other choice but to keep it around for a little longer. Therefore, even though we have new Chromium-based browsers in Windows, IE is the only browser that is compatible with such apps.

However, users not using such apps should refrain from using Internet Explorer and replace it with modern browsers such as Edge and Chrome, as they offer better security, privacy, cookie controls, and so much more.

Put simply, Internet Explorer is just a piece of history, which’ll get axed sooner or later. Though for now, the sensible thing to do would be ditch IE and move on to a modern browser which offer better security, privacy, and customization.

Besides, Microsoft’s security chief has also warned millions of users who still use Internet Explorer as their default web browser are putting themselves at a huge risk.

  • PlayStation 5 to be more environment-friendly

PlayStation 5 to be more environment-friendly

Sony recently announced in a blog post about its commitment to making the PlayStation 5 more environment-friendly. The UN Environment committee plans to join hands with the video game industry to make it more sustainable.

CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan said that the next PlayStation 5 will consume less power while in rest mode. According to him, one million PS5 owners using the feature would save enough electricity to power nearly a thousand homes. Besides, Sony wants to provide reference material for developers who want to make games that create sustainability.

Sony will also work on several campaigns to create awareness, such as informing customers via messaging about energy-saving features in their consoles. Also, the company plans to launch PS VR games and applications that could bring awareness about climate issues.

“There is an undeniable opportunity for leaders in the games industry to take a stand and support the UN Environment team by communicating the importance of preserving natural resources for generations to come. At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be more proud to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and the commitments announced. We look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan.

Sony also bragged about how it has been revising its production to become more energy-efficient and environment-friendly. According to the company, changes to the PlayStation 4 have already saved around 16 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Besides, Sony believes that this number will rise to 29 million metric tons over the next ten years.

Elsewhere, the PlayStation 5 is also expected to feature a built-in SSD and offer 8K gameplay support. As far as release and pricing goes, Sony hasn’t revealed a specific price point or an exact release date yet, but multiple sources indicate that the PS5 won’t be released before April 2020.

  • Google Play Pass launched with 350 games and apps

Google Play Pass launched with 350 games and apps

Google has finally launched its version of Apple Arcade with the ‘Play Pass’ subscription service for Android-powered devices. The service will be available in the US starting this week, and it’s expected to roll out in other countries ‘soon’.

Google Play Pass is similar to Apple Arcade, however, Google’s take on its app-based subscription model is slightly different than that of Apple. Google’s Play Pass Service includes apps as well as games, while Apple Aracde solely offers games with a library of 100 titles.

Google Play Pass service bundles 350 games and apps with no ads and without any in-app purchases for $4.99. Besides, Google will offer users a 10-day free trial period and also plans to give users the first year at an introductory price of $1.99 a month.

“The Play Pass collection spans hundreds of titles, from games that help you unwind to apps that power productivity,” said Google product manager Austin Shoemaker in a blog post.

Some of the game titles offered in the service at launch include long-time favorites such as Limbo, Monument Valley, Stardew Valley, and Risk. Other notable games include the likes of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Terraria, Old Man’s Journey, and Mini Metro. Nearly two-thirds of the apps included in the Play Pass service are games. Apart from games, the service also includes popular apps such as Accuweather which are served free of ads and without any in-app purchases.

Besides, Google also promised that it plans to add new games and apps to the service every month.

The launch of Play Pass comes as Google plans to make big headway in the gaming sector. The search engine giant plans to release Stadia in November. The upcoming streaming platform is designed to run games without a high-end PC or console. All you’ll need is a Chromecast and television which allows you to access high-resolution games via the cloud.

  • Amazon’s Alexa-powered wireless earbuds might feature fitness tracking

Amazon’s Alexa-powered wireless earbuds might feature fitness tracking

Reports emerged earlier this year indicating that Amazon is working Alexa-powered wireless earbuds, that’ll compete directly with Apple’s Airpods. Today, a new report from CNBC has shed more light on the matter. Besides, the report also suggests that Amazon plans to launch a new, better sounding Echo speaker

To begin with, the report suggests that Amazon’s upcoming earbuds will not only feature Alexa but will also include multiple health and fitness features. They will reportedly come equipped with a built-in accelerometer that will be able to track calories burned, distance ran, and the wearer’s pace.

However, the report also indicates that Amazon’s earbuds might not feature cellular connectivity. Now, this could make Alexa integration a bit of a hassle as they would need to pair with a smartphone to unlock Alexas’s full functionality.

As far as pricing goes, the report suggests that Amazon’s earbuds will get a price tag of less than $100, which make them more affordable than Apple’s Airpods and other popular wireless earbuds. That said, it remains unclear whether Amazon’s upcoming earbuds will feature true wireless capabilities like Airpods. Today’s report from CNBC, however, states that the Alexa earbuds would be similar to Airpods.

Elsewhere, the report also suggests that Amazon plans to launch a new Echo speaker with a built-in woofer, which is expected to improve the sound quality significantly, compared to the current Echo lineup, Apple’s HomePod, as well as Google Home. Amazon recently announced a lossless tier for its music streaming service that will offer songs with a bit depth of 16 bits and a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. And it would be a good idea if Amazon launches a new, improved Echo speaker that would allow subscribers to listen to music in high-definition with better sound quality.

Amazon is expected to announce these new products during its annual launch event in Seattle on Wednesday. We’ll bring you all the live updates from the event. Until then, keep checking back for more.

  • Twitter now lets iOS users add favorited lists to their Home timeline

Twitter now lets iOS users add favorited lists to their Home timeline

Twitter has rolled out a new feature that lets users pin up to five favorite lists in its iOS app. The feature essentially works like TweetDeck, allowing users to easily switch their timeline to view tweets directly from the Home screen.

“On iOS starting September 23, we’ll be expanding this feature to people across the globe who will now get to pin up to five Lists directly to their Home timeline, and with a fancy new landing page,” Twitter shared in a press release.

With the new feature, users can pin and unpin up to five lists, whose tweets they can view directly on their Home timeline. The whole idea is to give users a more curated experience compared to what chronological or top tweets can offer.

Twitter has also added a new landing page for your pinned lists, which displays a header image and more information about your customizable timelines, such as the numbers of members and subscribers. iOS users can customize their lists by tapping on their profile picture. Then, in the home menu, just click on the lists tab.

“This is just the beginning of our work to make Lists a way to discover and follow conversations about the things you care about. By the end of the year, Lists will be getting a revamp with new features including the ability to report, discover and share Lists created by the global Twitter community,” Twitter added in the press release.

Meanwhile, Android users wondering whether the feature would arrive on their platform. Well, there’s good news as key sources confirm that Twitter plans to expand the feature outside of iOS. That said, there’s no word on the exact date yet.

  • Adware apps with over 500 million donwloads found in the PlayStore

Adware apps with over 500 million donwloads found in the PlayStore

Yet again, apps ridden with nasty malware were found in the PlayStore. Google has faced some serious criticism in recent months as malicious applications have often found a way to get into the Play Store. These sketchy applications witness millions of downloads before being deemed as dangerous and removed subsequently.

The latest culprits happen to be four VPNs and two selfie apps, which have collectively racked up over 500 million installs. These apps contain harmful adware that seeks sensitive system information which according to researchers, can cause serious damage. The VPN apps in question include HotSpotVPN, Free VPN Master, Secure VPN, or CM Security Applock AntiVirus. All these four apps originate in China and bombard users’ with fraudulent ads. The four Android VPNs have been collectively installed more than 500 million times.

“In case of outside ad fraud ads pop up while apps are running in the background or even outside the app environment (e.g. ad views placed on the home screen and covering app icons that users must reach to start new apps). As a user, not only do I think it’s treacherous for a privacy app to abruptly intrude my phone screen, but the constant HTTP requests keep the phone CPU heated and drain phone battery,” researcher Andy Michael wrote in a blog post.

Meanwhile, the two camera apps deemed as a security risk are Sun Pro Beauty Camera and Funny Sweet Beauty Selfie Camera. Both of these apps were identified by security researchers to have racked up more than 1.5 million downloads infecting devices with adware. These camera apps were bombarding screens with full-screen ads and even continued to display ads when the pop-up remained unopened.

Security researchers at Wandera suggest that the permissions requested by these apps can cause more harm than just filling screens with fraudulent ads. These include installing shortcuts, serving fake system alerts, as well as recording audio without user permission.

“Intrusive out-of-app ads interrupt users in the middle of their workflow, brick their devices, drain the device battery, and in some cases, infected devices need to be replaced altogether,” explained security researchers at Wandera.

Naturally, researchers have advised that if any of these apps are installed on your device, you should delete them right away.

  • John Wick Hex set to arrive on Windows and Mac on October 8

John Wick Hex set to arrive on Windows and Mac on October 8

The official John Wick game finally has a release date. John Wick Hex will launch on the PC and Mac exclusively via Epic Games store on October 8 for $19.99 The game is developed by Bithell Games, in partnership with Good Shephard Entertainment and Lionsgate Games.

John Wick Hex takes place before the events shown in the movies, where the lead protagonist Wick still works as a professional assassin. Actors from John Wick movies such as Ian McShane and Lance Reddick also feature in the game as Winston and Charon. Meanwhile, Mike Bithell also announced that Troy Baker (Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Infamous Second Son, Batman: Arkham Origins) will play the original villain in the game. Sadly, Keanu Reeves won’t be the voice of his in-game character.

John Wick Hex combines action sequences from the movie into a top-down strategy game where players are supposed to plan their moves ahead of time. It’s more like a real-time strategy game where your actions will have consequences that will play out. The game mixes real-time strategy with tactical decisions, and Wick’s every move and action in the game will take place in a timeline. For instance, you’ll have limited ammo and reloading obviously takes time, so you’ll need to devise a strategy before you run into enemies. It’s essentially all about time management here.

John Wick Hex will be exclusively available via the Epic Games store. The action-packed strategy puzzler will be available on the PC and Mac starting October 8. Besides, you can also pre-order the game for just $20. The game is also expected to arrive on consoles, but there’s no word on when yet.

  • Facebook teams up with Ray-Ban to develop smart glasses

Facebook teams up with Ray-Ban to develop smart glasses

Facebook has reportedly joined hands with Ray-Ban to develop its augmented reality glasses. Code-named Project Orion, the project is expected to be ready for a commercial release between 2023 and 2025.

According to the report, Facebook has been working on augmented reality glasses for the past couple of years now, however, several roadblocks related to the development of these smart glasses have left the company with no choice but to seek outside help. Hence, the social networking giant has teamed up Ray-Ban’s parent company Luxottica to complete the project.

Notably, the report indicates these glasses are designed to replace smartphones. These smart glasses would look much like any typical sunglasses that are currently available in the market. However, they’ll be equipped with hardware that’ll allow users to take calls, show information to them on a small display, and have social networking features.

Facebook has hundreds of employees at its Redmond office in Washington working on these augmented reality glasses. However, the company has reportedly struggled to shrink the size of these glasses to make them more practical and appealing to users. Facebook’s Project Orion smart glasses are expected to be ready for consumers before 2023. However, one can’t say whether the project is practical enough to be ready for a commercial release. With that being said, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly asked the company’s augmented and virtual reality divisions to focus more on Project Orion.

Elsewhere, Facebook is also working on a voice assistant to rival the likes of Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and the Google Assistant. Facebook envisions that its new AI assistant could be used with Project Orion, serving as user input for these glasses. In addition, Facebook is also working on a device code-named Agios, a ring-shaped device that allows users to interact via motion sensors.

  • Amazon announces lossless streaming with Amazon Music HD

Amazon announces lossless streaming with Amazon Music HD

To better compete with the likes of Apple Music and Spotify, Amazon has rolled out a lossless streaming tier called Amazon Music HD. The company claims that this new tier added to its existing music service allows subscribers to listen to more than 50 million songs in high-definition.

Amazon Music HD costs $12.99 a month for Amazon Prime members and $14.99 a month for non-Prime users. The new service will offer songs with a bit depth of 16 bits and a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. Besides, Amazon claims that customers will be able to stream around a ‘million songs’ in  Ultra HD, which offers a bit depth of 24 bits and a sample rate of up to 192 kHz.

“We spoke with many artists while developing Amazon Music HD, who were excited about the potential for fans to be able to stream their favorite music and hear as it was originally recorded. From rock to hip-hop to classical and pop, we believe listening to music at this level of sound will make customers fall in love again with their favorite music and artists,” said Amazon Music vice president Steve Boom.

Amazon recommends that users have a data speed of at least 1.5Mbps. Besides, the company also notes that sound quality and compatibility are hardware dependent. Amazon Music HD is compatible with a wide range of iOS and Android devices, including both desktop and mobile. The service is also available on some Echo devices, Fire TV, as well as Fire tablets. Amazon Music HD is now available in the US, UK, Germany, and Japan. The company is also offering a 90-day free trial for users to try out the new lossless streaming tier.

For now, Spotify and Apple Music rule the roost when it comes to music streaming services. Spotify is a globally popular brand and Apple has partnered with several carriers in the US to boost the popularity of its music service. Amazon’s latest move can certainly attract more users to subscribe to its service. And if Amazon’s newly added lossless streaming tier turns out to be a success, we won’t be surprised if the likes of Spotify and Apple Music come up with something similar.
