Reports emerged earlier this year that MediaTek has been working on a 5G system-on-chip(SoC). Now, the company has officially announced the new chipset, dubbed as the Dimesity 1000.

The new flagship chipset will be equipped to support 90Hz QHD displays, up to 16GB of quad-channel LPDDR4x RAM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, hexa-core AI processor, and download speeds of up to 4.7/2.5 Gbps.

Besides, the flagship SoC will be the first chipset to come with integrated support for 2G, 3G, 4G, and sub-6 GHz 5G networks. MediaTek also claims that Dimensity 1000 is the world’s first SoC to support 5G dual SIM, as most smartphones overseas are equipped with dual-SIM slots.

“Our Dimensity series is a culmination of MediaTek’s investment in 5G and positions us as a leader driving 5G development and innovation. Our 5G technology goes head-to-head with anyone in the industry,” said MediaTek President Joe Chen.

The new chipset appears to be rather capable in the photography department as well. It packs a five-core image signal processor, with support for up to 80MP/24fps in single-lens cameras, and 32MP/16MP in dual-lens cameras. Other key details include support for Wi-Fi 6, AV1 codec, Bluetooth 5.1, along with support for QHD+ screens at 90Hz, and FHD screens at 120Hz.

MediaTek, however, hasn’t announced any specific smartphones that will come fitted with the new Dimensity 1000 SoC. That said, the company did confirm that the first smartphones powered by this new SoC will be announced in the first quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, users in the US and Europe can expect the first handsets with this chipset in the second half of 2020.

MediaTek hopes to be the catalyst for 5G adoption with the new Dimesity 1000 SoC, as most 5G smartphones available today are rather expensive. Besides, the company also revealed that it is working on other mid-range 5G chips for next year as well, which again, appears to be a big push towards 5G adoption.
